About the Author
Sandy Winfree, the artist and author of this book, lives in Anchorage, Alaska, the famed northern "City of Flowers." Sandy's award-winning art has been selected for art shows from Alaska to Antarctica. She is an avid photographer and flower gardener. Sandy works in a variety of art media, with a special love for creating realistically shaded black pencil drawings. For her Enchanted Garden series of artworks, Sandy has drawn friends and family among meticulously detailed flowers. In addition to this coloring book, Sandy has used some of her original drawings as the basis for her paintings and colored pencil art quilts. Sandy holds degrees from Iowa State University, Texas Woman's University and Northern Arizona University, where she received the faculty-choice award for outstanding graduating student in Visual Communications. Sandy worked in occupational therapy, and taught classes at the elementary and university level, before moving to Alaska and becoming a full-time artist more than a decade ago.

An Enchanted Garden of Coloring Delights

Enchanted Garden is a coloring book for adults and youths by Alaskan artist and author Sandy Winfree. For full disclosure, let me start my review by saying that I know Sandy's artwork well. She's a very talented, experienced artist and a close friend. Sandy has exhibited her original art in shows and galleries around the country. She gave me a copy of her book and invited me to try it out.
Sandy's book includes 27 line drawings based on her highly detailed original drawings of beautiful flowers, tiny women and girls (fairies or sprites). On the front and back covers, Sandy shows us how she might color two of the line drawings contained inside. She also provides very good coloring tips on the first page.
Sandy recommends coloring with regular (waxy) colored pencils, so I tried them first. They worked great! Removing a page by carefully tearing or cutting it from the book, and placing the page over a smooth hard surface before coloring produced nice solid colors. Conversely, using colored pencils on paper placed over a rough tabletop surface reproduced that texture.
Then I dug through my art box to experiment with multiple brands of water and alcohol-based artist markers (Tombow, Prismacolor, Pitt, and Micron), highlighters (Foray, Sharpie, Sanford), wax crayons (Crayola), chalk pastels and pastel pencils (General and Artist Loft) and wax pastels (Artist Loft), graphite, two brands of watercolor pencils (Royal and Artist Loft. The heavy (60 lb) bright white paper in this book worked very well with wax-based pencils, wax pastels, graphite, and crayons. Most of the other media worked well too. When I used ink markers like Sharpie, I'd insert a blank sheet of paper behind the page I was coloring.
I've attached five photos of pages straight out of the book, and another four pages after my family had colored them in with regular colored pencils. Enchanted Garden should provide coloring artists with many days of coloring enjoyment, and with many pieces of finished wall art. Recommended for coloring artists of all ages.

27 Lovely Floral Designs with Flower Fairies – printed on one side of the page

[[VIDEOID:8066ecd140f9ae128aded41ce12238a]]This is a coloring book with 27 full page flower designs which also include a lovely flower fairy nestled within. Each of the designs is titled at the bottom of the page and each design has a framing line around it to provide a natural stopping point while coloring.
I like the fairies being integrated so well within the designs – it makes it seem as if I might just catch a peek of one if I go out into my garden and lift of flower petals. The figures are quite pretty and match the flowers extremely well. The flowers have a lovely flowing look to them.

Designs do not merge into the binding and have a framing line around them
Room enough to cut pages out if you wish to do so

Coloring pencils work well: soft lead lay down color, layer, and blend well; hard lead dent the back of the page but lay down good color

Very pleased with Sandra Winfree's coloring book

Loved the beautifully detailed coloring book. Especially love the hidden fairies in the flowers. Just recently as an adult I started enjoying the relaxation of coloring again. Compared to other coloring books this one certainly fits in as one for all levels of coloring artist. Sandra Winfree did an amazing job on the details of every page. I prefer using coloring pencils most often finding it easier on the finer details, however for those who enjoy markers for coloring I think markers would also be great for this book. I will certainly keep my eyes out for any future coloring books she may put out there.
