An eye-catching, modern approach to resume-writing; your resumes will stand out

I purchased this for a former co-worker, but I read through it before handing it over and giving it my full recommendation. This is a fantastic book. She presents an approach to resume-writing that breaks from the clichés of the past several decades. This is pertinent in my opinion because skill sets desired by today's employers, particularly among those involving computers or medical care, are too numerous and repetitive to list. (Plus, simply listing common skills will make your resume no different than the 99 others sitting underneath it.) Debra shows you how to construct a resume in such a way that you can communicate your qualifications economically and memorably.
For example, I had never considered including hyperlinks or a QR code in my resume that would enable an employer to quickly view my portfolio. Why simply tell someone what your skills are when you can actually show those skills in action? There are several other clever ideas that will present your experience more vividly.
She passes the test of credibility for resume-writing because her book is also easy-to-read, to-the-point, and memorable. It is not long and technical. There are short paragraphs of explanation, which are intercut with pleasing diagrams and examples. In addition, there are recurring motifs such as the "Common Sense Shout Out" which gives you the gist of the logic behind her technique. (It reminded me in a way of the "Complete Idiot's Guide" or "... For Dummies" series of books that were popular years ago.)
However, most importantly, her book explains WHY this strategy works. She provides counterexamples, while putting you in the perspective of the employer reading the resume, so you can judge for yourself which approach is better.
Finally, and of course this is a very minor point, but the book has a pleasant feel to it. :) The cover has a smooth, almost rubberized texture to it (like a grippy iPhone case). Why would that matter? I don't know. It's just cool to me. But it also helpfully makes a point. Her book stands out, with its bright color and bold font. You would be able to find it quickly by sight or by touch in a pile of books. As they say, "the medium is the message."

This book is an easy and quick read that is full great ideas and useful information on how to build your resume for the job you want. I really liked how it was full of different and more relevant information than other resume books out there. What I liked most though was by the time I finished I was excited and motivated to start building my new resume and tailoring it for my ideal job. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking to make a career change, or anyone currently searching for a job and feeling like their resume is going into a "black hole".
