This book is about a life's journey that lead to forgiving oneself and the one who was thought to have hurt you the most. Love and Forgive coupled together are powerful tools. Sheila Garner overcame her hurts by the hand of God utilizing the two most powerful things in this here world LOVE AND FORGIVENESS.

This coming of age book is thought-provoking and captures the attention of the reader in a variety of ways. Written in first person, Sheila Garner allows the reader to enter into her world – the reader is privy to glimpses of a child/daughter, young woman, sister, wife, and mother finding her way through life while trying to acquaint herself with her mother; a woman that is unknown to her. This book encompasses the power of love, grace, mercy, compassion, forgiveness, and the willingness to embrace life despite opposition from family, community, and the church. Sheila Garner maintains her voice though out the narrative and tells “Herstory” through the lens of the cross while contributing to African American Literature and Womanist Theology.

I recommend this book!

I'm in my twenties and I am beginning to learn who my parents are as adults and not just as parents. I now find myself asking things like: "Ma, why did you write me letters to talk to me and Dad why did you beat us?" I felt loved growing up but there are some times when I, as a child, questioned that. Even if you feel like you know your mother, this book really gives you the confidence to ask your parents questions, it pushes you to appreciate your parents and most of all, it allows you to forgive yourself and your parents for whatever you feel they didn't do "right" in your development. This book is for healing!
