Evolution: Still a Theory in Crisis, by Michael Denton

More than thirty years after his landmark book Evolution: A Theory in Crisis (1985), biologist Michael Denton revisits his earlier thesis about the inability of Darwinian evolution to explain the history of life. He argues that there remains “an irresistible consilience of evidence for rejecting Darwinian cumulative selection as the major driving force of evolution.” From the origin of life to the origin of human language, the great divisions in the natural order are still as profound as ever, and they are still unsupported by the series of adaptive transitional forms predicted by Darwin. In addition, Denton makes a provocative new argument about the pervasiveness of nonadaptive order throughout biology, order that cannot be explained by the Darwinian mechanism.

How contingency can't explain everything in biology
By CC
Don’t miss the epigenetics chapter, the cave man chat in the chapter on language or the description of the eel with the migrating anus in this well footnoted challenge to biological functionalism. Opposing the Darwinian paradigm that all features of living things are functional adaptations (functionalism), Denton culls peer reviewed work from disparate disciplines while placing origin of life issues in a larger history of ideas framework, opening the discussion beyond panadaptionism. Denton points to distinct and highly conserved features, like the insect body plan of head, thorax, abdomen with 6 pentadyctl legs, that recur as universal forms and thus he revives formalism or structuralism. He argues that some of these and other non-adaptive features could not have developed incrementally but only in saltational events, pointing to other instances of complexity, such as the enucleate blood cell, that likewise could have no advantage in an incomplete state.
Readers who note differences between Denton and other ID figures (for instance universal common descent is assumed by Denton and questioned by Jonathon Wells) might enjoy Discovery Institute podcasts at evolutionnews.org featuring interviews with these scientists and even a conversation between Denton and the sharp tongued David Berlinski.

An important new book--more than a rehash . . .
By Anaxagoras
This is not a rehash of Denton's 1986 work; it contains genuinely new material and offers some suggestions as to new paradigmatic perspectives in biology. Denton makes persuasive science-based arguments not only highlighting the deficits of the old Darwinian model, but offers a fresh path towards correcting, or at least addressing, the accumulating anomalies within the thread-bare doctrines Neo-Darwinism. Moreover, Denton's historical approach allows him to cast this within a larger framework of the history of ideas. I highly recommend this new and exciting book. It will repay not only those interested in biology, but historians of science as well.

Great book
By BobT
I'm still reading this book but, what I've read so far is fascinating and thought provoking. No wonder the evolutionists continue to whine and complain. Compelling evidence against Darwinian evolution is rampant and obvious, but it's not the politically correct avenue nor thought process to take. Dr. Denton has done another wonderful job in explaining the vast shortcomings of Darwin's theory, and all the rebuttals I've read fail to address the evidence, instead either twisting what was written, or glossing over it with wordy nonsense.
