Winner of the National Indie Excellence Award  (Women's Issues Category).Finalist in the Journey Awards for Narrative Nonfiction.Brave, raw, and unflinchingly honest, this book is a weight loss journey, a love story, a heart beating loudly on the page. Every day we battle against something--injustice, our spouses, our weight. Seldom do we acknowledge the real wars we wage. Repressing feelings and silencing our voices, we suffer under the surface, attributing emotional distress and unwanted pounds to the inescapable effects of hormones or age. But weight gain, anxiety, and marital difficulties aren't always so easy to explain. In her poignant and touching memoir, Allison doesn't offer recipes, exercise tips, or advice. Instead, she shows us how to stand up, express what we want, and develop empathy for ourselves and the people we love. In doing so, she provides invaluable insight for those seeking to lose weight, save a marriage, or make a significant life change. This book won the National Indie Excellence Award for Women's Issues. Includes a Readers Guide.

''In her latest book, Destiny Allison has deftly parsed that feminist cliche the personal is the political in a fresh new way. The search for the authentic self is new for every generation and Allison's book is a valuable contribution to that quest for today's women.'' --Patricia Murphy, PhD, John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Women's Health Policy Fellow and author of Making Connections: Women, Work, and Abuse

Thank you Destiny
By Diane Terhune
I met Destiny last year in her store in Santa Fe. She is a beautiful warm intelligent woman. After talking with her I felt as though I knew her forever and when I found out that she was writing this book, I knew I had to read it. I found her writing compelling and I had a hard time putting it down. She was so honest and brave exposing her life in so many ways that many of us feel and experience, but perhaps don't express to one another. I for one can relate to many of her fears and emotions. One can only love and admire anyone who faced a long buried hurt and came out the other side stronger than ever. We should all speak up as women and support each other with love and compassion--Thank you Destiny--You have made me and I'm sure countless other women stronger and more willing to face our demons and find that any of the hurt we endured in our past does not have a place in our future.

Well-written look at the culture creating body image and self-esteem issues for all of us
By Sherrey Meyer
Congratulations are due Destiny Allison on writing a gritty, raw, honest story revealing her self-examination of who she is and who she wants to be.

Although the initial focus centers on an injury which caused Destiny to gain weight, the core of her story, in my opinion, is how we treat ourselves and each other. We live in a fast-paced, business-dominated society where men have always ruled and overseen the financial and material components of the business world and life in general. However, in today’s society, many women have taken the risk of moving up the corporate and commercial business ladders to roles of power and authority.

Either of the sexes often are demeaning to those of the opposite sex. Self-image is one of the strong components in Destiny’s story. She willingly shares the incidences of male associates in business ignoring her presence if her husband, Steve, happened to be present. Also, a small part of the battles we wage against one another relate to sexist comments, glances, and overtures made in poor taste. Tearing down another’s self-image is rude and inappropriate. But Destiny shares how she overcame this, how her husband supported her, and what it meant to her to take control over her life and journey.

We are not born into this world to be fodder for the other sex’s grand sense of power nor for their jokes and fun. We are born into this world to be ourselves, to be present and growing into the person we want to be. This is our journey and not one to be hindered by others and their demeaning comments. Finding empathy for one another goes a long way to making these demeaning actions take a back seat, and Destiny shows how that can happen.

I believe Destiny has written a remarkable book which will help any people–those hoping to lose weight, renew their relationship, achieve their dreams in the business world, and to just be themselves without fear of losing their self-esteem.

Beyond the core content, Destiny’s writing style is concise (after all the book is only 110 pages), easily understood, and simple to put into practice her truths and suggestions. Destiny is a role model parents can share with their daughters and sons at proper ages teaching them how to prove themselves as the persons they want to be and how to do so without damaging others.

Definitely a 5-star quality piece of writing. You know I don’t give them lightly, and I suggest this is a must read for everyone who spends time interacting with others.

FTC Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher via WOW! Women on Writing in exchange for a fair and honest review. Opinions expressed are mine.

I was not disappointed. Thank you, Destiny

Gist: Would recommend

First Reaction: The title includes the word "diet" but this book is about so much more than that. It's about the many layers of personhood.

Second Reaction: THIS BOOK NEEDS A BIG FAT FLAMING TRIGGER WARNING STICKER FOR ANYONE WHO HAS SUFFERED SEXUAL VIOLENCE.

I received a copy for review from Destiny Allison herself, and I am so incredible grateful.

Around 60% mark (I read the kindle version of the book), I decided I wanted to give the book 4 stars, but I read this book in a day, which is highly unusual for me, even for a short novel. I found myself entranced by the story, recognizing the sentiment. No, I'm not married. No, a medical issue didn't force me to leave a successful welding career. No, I did not start a business. I have, however, lived my twenty years on this Earth as a female-bodied person, and the themes in Allison's novel seem central to our personhood. Too often we are reduced to objects; our worth depends on our looks and our utility to male-bodied people. We begin to see ourselves in this fashion, even as we real against the unfairness. We learn to quiet our opinions, to make small adjustments to ourselves to accommodate the male personalities on our lives. This is, obviously, a gross generalization, but I've lived it long enough and seen it in enough of my friends to know there's some weight to it. Speaking of weight-- emotional baggage aside, the weight loss method in this book is pretty solid. It's not a how-to, which is what makes the advice so good. You lose weight by living a more active and emotionally healthy live.

A note on the sexual violence- I almost didn't finish the novel. The chapters near the end had me quivering. I've been reading a lot of female narratives lately, and every single one of them has included sexual violence in some form. At what point does the violence stop being novel and start being a problem? The book's I've been reading date back to the 1960s, yet female-bodied people are still going through the same things today. We scream, we fight, we go ignored. I, for one, plan on redoubling my efforts to prevent more women from falling victim.

This book is most likely something I'm going to keep in my library. It's not super uplifting, but it's empowering, and comes with the message that we can overcome even our worst nightmares (cliche, I know, but true).
