Empowering, inspiring, and engaging. No-nonsense advice explained with stories and analogies.
By R. Russell
I’m always looking for good books on business and personal development. I’ve found many interesting ones, but very few that really understand the challenges that women (and women only) face in business and in life. This one does. I’m actually reading it right now, and it’s making me feel so emotional that I stopped to come and post this review.

Let me start by saying that I got it because the title is catchy. Moxie? What the heck is that? I had never heard that word before. The author defines it (among other words) as “courage, know-how . . . aggressive energy, confidence, fearlessness . . . determination.” I run a self-development group for women and I’ve been looking for a good motivational book lately. I hadn’t been very lucky: outside of the classics (Anthony Robbins, Dale Carnegie… ) that I’ve already read, I was having a hard time finding something that was neither boring nor superficial. I’m glad I decided to try this one.

The author talks to you like she’s your best friend. But a wise (and tough!) friend that’s not afraid to say it like it is. She kind of reminds me of Dolly Parton in that movie “Straight Talk”, where she plays a radio show host who gives her callers no-nonsense advice for life’s tough situations, and she does it in a way that’s so nice, clear, and engaging (like this author, she uses stories and analogies), that everybody ends up loving her.

Something that I liked about this book that I find unique is that it mixes education with inspiration: it is full of “Moxie Minutes,” which are quick lessons or inspirational quotes. For instance, one that particularly resonated with me reads, “As I look back on my life, I realize that every time I thought I was being rejected from something good, I was actually being redirected to something better.” That’s something that even the most positive among us need to be reminded of from time to time, so I’m thinking I will make a poster with that Moxie Minute and post it on our meeting room to share the positive energy I’m getting by reading this.

Just last night I was watching a Korean soap opera (don’t ask me why—insomnia probably) about a woman who is left by her husband because she’s too fat. She’s been wonderful to her in laws, but they too embrace the man’s mistress, a beautiful young woman. So our heroine attempts suicide, fails, and is rescued by a plastic surgeon (male, of course) who turns her into a beauty that turns heads. Now she’s planning revenge.

Seriously? If you’ve read how Korean women are going about plastic surgery you’ll be shocked. But I honestly believe that here in America society is sending us women similar messages, more subtly of course, but nonetheless disempowering.

I don’t mean to get off track, but I am so fed up with that, that today when I started reading “Finding Your Moxie” I got so excited that I wish I could buy a copy of this book and send it to every woman out there that’s thinking she’s not pretty enough, not smart enough, not whatever enough! My gosh, I am so tired of society placing so much pressure on us to be perfect or needing a husband to be happy! I’m definitely going to include this one in my list of required readings for my women’s self-development group.

A Little Too Righteous
By Quirky Girl
While I liked the idea of this book and certainly all of the advice, I felt the author was a tad to boastful and full of herself. There were several examples she used of her life in which she put her "truths" into action and she threw total shade at other people. The worst instance was probably her friend who agreed to sell things for Ms. Fox. Ms. Fox really throws the friend under the bus and doesn't look at her own actions in anyway (ie: perhaps she should have not imposed or perhaps she should have offered something in exchange for the friends help). The tone througought the whole book was a bit righteous. I usually judge a book by the author; would I want to sit down and have a beer (or coffee, tea, etc) with the author? Would I love to meet the author even though I'd probably feel bashful because the author is so talented? The answer to this in regard to Fox is no to both. She is probably a lovely woman in real life, however, this isn't a book I'd give as a graduation gift due to it's overtly righteous tone. Love the cover - and enjoyed the "Moxie Moments."

Enjoyable read. Lots of personal narrative.
By B. Caruso
I have been out of the workforce for a number of years, but as a woman with Aspergers, raising a kid with Aspergers, and having to frequently deal with the outside world and other people, I do like to read up to help me make my voice more effective.

Finding Your Moxie is perfect for that. I wish I had this when I was in college, it could have saved me so much frustration and heartbreak.

Debra Fox shares her background and experiences, and for me, the stories of her childhood were so familiar...The attitudes and background of her elders also ran parallel to mine. I was smitten, as clearly here is a woman with a similar upbringing with the same stereotyping, myths, and mores shaping her daily life and her future, but she isn't autistic, so it was pretty neat for me to read her narrative and have sort of a window into the impact of such myths and lies and stereotyping, has on a person (without another party blaming all of my experiences on autism, which is what too many professionals do, rather than appreciating the weight of all aspects of a person's life and world).

As a frequently distracted reader, who does better with small bites of information, I would have liked more visuals to simplify and streamline the concepts as I find they are easier to integrate when presented this way, to augment more verbose exploration within the chapters. I think it was great that she provided specific exercises to explore beliefs that are holding one back and correcting those beliefs so one can move forward, empowered and full of moxie. It is very heavy on the narrative and Debra Fox frequently mentions the naysayers and her accomplishments. She has accomplished so much, but the frequent mentioning felt a bit like she was not just reassuring the reader of her credentials but also herself. Oh well, Finding Your Moxie is a lifelong journey for anyone who seeks it.

I think I would have gotten more out of this book if the entire thing, was presented as a workbook, with space to answer questions and that sort of thing. I would happily plunk down more cash for a companion workbook (hint hint, Ms. Fox!).
