The beloved New York Times bestselling author Making Toast and Kayak Morning returns with a powerful meditation on a universal subject: love.
In The Book of Love, Roger Rosenblatt explores love in all its moods and variations—romantic love, courtship, battle, mystery, marriage, heartbreak, fury, confusion, melancholy, delirium, ecstasy; love of family, of friends; love of home, of country, of work, of writing, of solitude, of art; love of nature; love of life itself.
Rosenblatt is on a quest to illuminate this elusive and essential emotion, to define this thing called love. Cleverly using lines from love songs to create a flowing ballad—as infectious and engaging as a jazz riff—he intersperses fictional vignettes that capture lovers in different situations, ages, and temperaments along with notes addressed to “you,” his wife of fifty years. “The story I have to tell is of you. Of others, too. Other people, other things. But mainly of you. It begins and ends with you. It always comes back to you.”
Lively yet profound, poignant yet joyous, The Book of Love is a triumph of intellect and imagination: a personal discourse on love that is both novel and timeless.

Review
While plenty of writers have tried their hand at capturing the improvisational brilliance of jazz, with varying degrees of success, Rosenblatt’s wanderings with the subject of love are like Coltrane at the Village Vanguard. When you hear it, you know.” (Kirkus Reviews)
“[This book] could probably be read in one sitting, but it’s too clever, and it dashes here and there, and for many such reasons, it’s a book to savor. Moreover, it can be opened and read at nearly any point. For Rosenblatt--wittily, urbanely, wholeheartedly--is in love… (Booklist)
“Forget the flowers and candy. This year’s ultimate Valentine’s Day treat is Roger Rosenblatt’s impressionistic riff on what makes the heart beat faster.” (O, the Oprah Magazine)
“Who wrote The Book of Love? This month, it’s Roger Rosenblatt; by interspersing romantic verses with personal and fictional vignettes, he composes a symphony of amore.” (Elissa Schappell, Vanity Fair)
“Interweaving short reflections with notes to his wife of 50 years, Rosenblatt crafts a colorful riff on love in all its forms.” (Good Housekeeping)
“Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Rosenblatt (The Boy Detective) uses lines from love songs to riff on everybody’s favorite subject.” (USA Today, New and Noteworthy-Lead Pick)
“Brimming with lyrical musings and offering uniquely experiential perspectives, THE BOOK OF LOVE is delightfully inventive, imaginative and deep.” (Bookreporter.com)
“By opening up his own heart and mind, Rosenblatt creates a work so diverse and comprehensive that it feels more like a shared dream than merely an intricately written reflection of one man’s life and loves.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

its not what you think
By Hope M. Terris
If you think this will simply be a tribute to author's wife in the traditional sense its not. Roger has a style all his own. There is a mixture of vignettes here about love all kinds intermingled with scenes from the life he and his wife have shared. Infused with lyrics to love songs, both old and new, and witty observations of all kinds this is a unique book, entertaining and thought-provoking.

LOVE IS EVERYTHING!
By R. Lyn Rousian
Who knows the true meaning of love? Does anyone know? This book rather intelligently reveals all kinds of love in every way that is humanly possible and even inhumane. Mr. Rosenblatt doesn't claim to be an expert, but after a string of amazing books released over the last 5 years on various subjects such as writing, & death (in his oblong mind both almost constitute the same thing), he decides this time to tackle love in the Book of Love & practically assures us he would like to be. At least that's the feeling I got when the author released his latest piece of work. My musical mind adores the way he uses certain lyrics to make very poignant and classic love stories, it just seems to make you want to fall in love with anyone. Or in this case the you which can really be anyone is centered around various points of love that can either be beautiful, deadly, sexy, strange, hateful, miserable, quite dirty ( not to worry, no one seems to be offended by those words anymore , or are they?) & extremely funny which is always the welcoming pattern the author continuously puts forth in all his works. And not just love of people but objects, diseases, and other worlds which make love become everything. While his references to a certain clock and the song Dancing In the Dark could be a bit repetitive, the way he blends completely different 'loving' situations into one giant imaginable love story is another touch of his brilliance. In my reading of this book I wondered if this would be a book catering mainly to women as this happily seems to be available quite on time for Valentine's Day & I thought of course not. Men should read this book if they would like to figure out how to be in love and surely the ladies need to read this in case they forgot how. All I know is I'm in love with this book & you will be too.

Brimming with lyrical musings and offering uniquely experiential perspectives, THE BOOK OF LOVE is delightfully inventive.
By Bookreporter
“Where is love? Under the moonlight in Vermont, or on the moon over Miami, or in autumn in New York, or April in Paris?”
In his latest book, the venerable author of MAKING TOAST and KAYAK MORNING explores the many manifestations of love --- from affection, courtship and passion to enchantment, resignation and respect. Rosenblatt freshly defines love --- the “sublime mess” --- through a series of short poetic narratives, personal stories, vignettes and stream-of-consciousness meditations. His intimate voice is devoted (“The story I have to tell is of you... It begins and ends with you. It always comes back to you”), desirous (“Would you be an angel and unbuckle my belt, take down my pants...?”), funny (“George Clooney and Johnny Depp excite you, you’ve made that clear. And shoe stores, they get you all stirred up as well”), practical (“Why would I choose some wild and crazy fantasy when I could read Alice McDermott?”), sensual (“I lick the salt on your skin, ah love. Your skin is my philosophy”) and sweet.
On the topic of marriage, Rosenblatt is satirical (“Of the six marriages announced on page eighty-three of the Sunday paper, 2.2 will fail, 2.3 will last, 1.5 will fail and last”), carefree (“Go it anyway, Bride and Groom. Damn the statistics”), tender and wise. In an almost aside, he tells a newly married couple, “People often think love’s simple because it arises naturally, in one’s nature. But love is no simpler than nature is simple. It makes demands. It requires corresponding actions. It takes concentration, patience, trust.” He quotes Philo (“Be kind, for everyone you meet is carrying a great burden”), then adds, “If you live in an atmosphere of kindness, it will enhance your love of each other. Love insists on kindness.”
Throughout his memoir, Rosenblatt richly describes his love of the natural world, detailing the winter blue bays, sprigs of yellow berries and the “stalactites of sun rays.” And just as he is attuned to the gushing sound of the Atlantic, he finds pleasure in music (from Gershwin to Lady Gaga), writers (including Shelley, Cummings and Auden) and writing, emphasizing art’s potent ability to make “sorrow endurable, evil intelligible, justice desirable, and love possible.”
Brimming with lyrical musings and offering uniquely experiential perspectives, THE BOOK OF LOVE is delightfully inventive, imaginative and deep.
