Greg Langford turned his tragedies into a comedy routine. He explains how it all started a few years back: "I reached out to his son [a friend's son] and met up with him once I landed in L.A. During our visit he said he had to run to Flapper's Comedy Club in Burbank for a comedy audition. I asked if I could join him, and he agreed. From there the story gets strange. I won't bore you with the details, but I was allowed to audition, and I was called back from the audition. I extended my stay in L.A. and was placed in a comedy contest at the club. I won the contest, and I was given a chance to perform in a live show where I received a lot more laughs than the headliner.
To be fair, I should tell you that just before my daddy died back in 1996, I had started doing a little standup comedy and had gotten a couple of spots at the famous Punch Line Comedy Club in Atlanta. I had maybe two months of practice when we got the news that Daddy had cancer. With all the trauma of the funerals to follow, I never had a chance or an ambition to return to comedy. I had postponed going back on stage because I just hadn't felt like being funny, and I had other matters to attend to.
Since I had extended my stay, I figured I might as well see and do as much of L.A. as I could. I took a couple of improv classes, went to a few shows, and spent a lot of time with my young friend from Winder, Georgia. Over the course of the next two weeks, I had a great chance to see how the comedy business and entertainment business works in L.A., and I didn't see any way to make a living unless it was low budget. While watching this little production of a one man show, it hit as to how I could deliver my message. I'll do a one man show telling the story of dysfunction that I've been sharing with you.

Heroically Well Adjusted

I thought the book was very interesting, funny in a lot of areas, but yet quite sad that these children had to live through so much tragedy. I was glad there are some "overcomers" in the family. I am afraid for the time period there were a lot of families in this same situation. Personally, I could do without the profanity and believe the story would have been just as intersting. I hope this young man finds true happiness in his life.

This could be happening right next door to you

This is a raw but incredible story of what addiction and mental illness can do to a family. I grew up around this family and never realized their pain. I believe the author's bravery in sharing such a painful exposure of his reality will help others living this type hell to find the resolve to stand up to the destroyer of their lives

Whew, what an unbelievable and powerful book Greg has written in Heroically Well Adjusted. I knew every member of the Langford family. Eddie an I were best friends growing up and Irene/Howard treated me like a son. As difficult and tough as it was to go back through all the pain that happen to the Langfords, Greg has found a way to help people who are going through these struggles. This book is a must read for all people struggling with addiction and mental illness. Mark Mitchell 3/15/16
