About the Author

Dearbhla Kelly has been in education training and guidance since 1991. She has been working as a Guidance Counsellor in secondary schools with Cavan and Monaghan ETB, in adult guidance with Donegal ETB and as a careers advisor in Trinity College Dublin. She uses a mixture of life coaching, NLP techniques, careers advice and counselling in order to give people practical solutions to finding their purpose and following their career dreams.

Dearbhla loves to walk and has roamed the Camino, completed in the Paris Marathon and strolled the streets of Japan, where she lived for 8 years. Dearbhla now lives in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal.

This book has been an invaluable resource in starting a conversation with my son around career choice. The range of experience of the contributors, the activities and down to earth way it is written really appealed to my son and I. It helps parents understand the education system, gives an overview of the options post Leaving Certificate and doesn't concentrate only on points and college. I've learned so much already in the short time I have it.

Interesting in spots - disapointing pointers to on-line resources

Some useful information - and as an Irish person it is nice to read something in this area that is directed towards the Irish educational system and Irish conventions. However it is quite disappointing that so many of the sections on assessing yourself (or your child) lead to web sites (which have self-guided tests) and many of those tests are for a fee (e.g.[...] ). If the book informed the reader which of the sites had a fee and if it is good value then it would be far more transparent.

They've Been There

This truly helpful book serves a dual purpose, detailing steps women can take to find the right man and the right job. Dating coach Ronnie Ryan lists some of the surprisingly common mistakes women still make at all stage of dating and shows how they can vastly improve their results . The value of her chapter on how to write an attractive Match profile exceeds the price of the book.

Women who just want to give up after putting up with jerks and enduring rejection will be heartened by Ryan's own experiences, especially her description of a first meeting with a man who gave her the once-over and announced he could only spare fifteen minutes. Her explanation of how she bounced back from that humiliation is inspiring and instructive. (She eventually met and married the right man.) There's an entire chapter on getting over rejection. Ryan also includes conversation prompts to help the reader get to know a man without interrogating him.

E. Elizabeth Carter's chapters for job seekers offer an insider's view of the hiring process. They're especially helpful to people who've been out of the game for a while and hurt their odds of getting hired by putting outdated things like, "References available upon request," on their resumes.Her tips on using LinkedIn to find a job are excellent, and people who fear coming off pushy or confrontational will find her advice on negotiating a salary to be pure gold.

A very helpful guide to read before, along with, and even after the original THE ALCHEMIST

I read THE ALCHEMIST when it first came out, about 25 years ago. It impressed me back then, and now I'm going tor read it again. After reading this "sidekick," I believe I'll get much more out of it, even though I was very inspired the first time.

This book helped me to better understand the background and history of both the book and its author -- the two go hand in hand. I was also helped to get an overview of the main characters and how they interacted with each other, the world about them, and with a Higher Destiny. Highlighting the important events in the original book also helped me remember them from my first reading, and now will help me immensely when I read it again. Best of all, this "sidekick" also guides me through lessons I can learn for my own spiritual life.

Inspirational!

I needed a good read for the train ride back home and I came across this book. I then researched it on Google and noticed that there was a lot of hype surrounded it. People claim that it has made a significant difference in their lives and I can agree with that after reading it. In terms of my daily endeavors, this book is both inspiring and highly motivational. The boy did not manage to find the treasure that he was looking for, but on his travels he manages to find himself and appreciate his surroundings. That alone is a treasure in my opinion! This book gives me the will to overcome hardships in my life and it taught me that I can even benefit from the negative things that happen in my life.

OK guide to the Alchemist

I found the material here to serve as an OK guide to the Alchemist. I first read the Alchemist many years ago and then again last year. (The Alchemist of course is a fantastic book and if you can read it in Portuguese like I was able to, then i feel you really gain a much fuller experience than with the English translation). This guide provides some insight into the key themes of the book so i feel it is a good complementary addition to the timeless tale for the casual reader. I do wish the cover had not been designed to fool someone into thinking this was authored by Paulo himself. I gave it 3 stars largely based on the fact that its free.

Very Disappointed

I started reading this book and thought it was going to be good. NOPE. Withing the first couple of chapters there are incomplete sentences, grammar errors and sentence structures that don't make sense. When I started reading I was captivated by the author's presentation of being an expert in this niche, but very soon was disappointed as I encountered so many errors. I am really irritated with so many Kindle book authors who don't take the time to really work on the content in their books. My review portfolio is starting to look like I am out to give bad reviews, I'm not. I am however honest in exposing poor materials when I find them This book is in POOR shape and needs a lot of editing attention.

A thoughtful, feel-good book; definitely worth the read

This book should be read as a sum of its parts, as a grown-up version of her flagship book, The Twelve Gifts of Birth. The compilation of her experiences, those of others she has met on her journey and inspirational quotes are a reminder of self-worth and serve up a great dose of positive thinking. Costanzo has put great thought into her stories, organizing them under categories of gifts, such as hope, joy, talent, imagination and so forth. The book starts out light, but then somehow pulls you in to its array, and you begin to feel the thoughtful wisdom of Costanzo's concept of our inherent twelve gifts. The depth of her thinking becomes clearer once read in full; however each section could serve as a daily source of self-reinforcement. In a stressed-out digital word, her small handbook is an invitation to stop, think, reflect and feel good about yourself.

Inspirational!

This is a very inspiring book which captures 12 touchstones for living. Among my favorites are Strength, Courage, Compassion, and Wisdom. Each "touchstone" in the book is described with personal stories of the author (my favorite) and the stories of others she has met along her life's journey that exemplify these intangible but very real concepts. Her writing is easily read and I finished the book in one evening as I couldn't put it down. Although it would be a nice book to read in bits as well, as the sections lend themselves nicely to a book for processing and even journaling to enhance one's own self discovery. (There are journaling questions at the end of each touchstone.) Costanzo provides the reader with plenty of food for thought. I came away feeling uplifted and encouraged.
In short, this book will make you feel good!

Touchstones Guide

This book is a guides me, and I'm not sure how it happens, actually. When I read these short, simple stories I feel like there's something in me that's shifted. I open the book and read whatever story I've opened to, I guess you could go in order, or you could go by whatever it is you seem to need at that time (Strength, Compassion, Courage, Hope and more), but I like to open and see what I've been given, and see how it fits into my life. Without fail, it does fit in and I put it down feeling my spirits lifted, or some insight gleaned. I didn't know what an actual "touchstone" was before this book, now I hunt for black stones with a distinctive little marking-- a variation on how the author described them--and when I find one I keep it, sometimes I pass it along to someone, just like I've been passing along this book and its stories.

The perfect book for those who are soul searching, in the need of tranformation, those who are on the verge of a life change, in the midst of change, and so much more. A truly inspirational book, full of hope and positive thinking. The author opens her soul in a genuine way and invites you to do the same. What an inspiring book! All the stories are so moving and there is such strength and courage in each of these women. I was totally inspired by what they shared and felt empowered by this book to continue to be the best that I can be. There are such positive messages throughout the book with some exercises for self reflection and improvement. I highly recommend this for book.

I recieved this book directly from the seller. I am NOT a reader - I am NOT one to journal..!!! I am now :) I've been soul searching, in need of tranformation, perhaps a life change & in the midst of change always! Debbie Turner truly wrote a very inspirational book, full of hope, change and positive thinking. She opens her soul in a genuine way and invites you to do the same. Each chapter ends with a woman's personal story about the path's chapter. I would suggest buying a very special pen and a book to write things down before you start! My husband and I are reading together (it was that good, he had to read & jot things down as well!) it's nice we have this time
Together. However our books are ours alone! We don't share our "journaling" through this! Keeping it very personal and real! I highly recommend this book! It's a great & easy read- Thank you!!

About the Author
David J. Eicher is Editor-in-Chief of Astronomy magazine, and one of the most recognized astronomy enthusiasts in the world. He has spoken widely to amateur astronomy groups and written eight books on astronomy including Comets: Visitors from Deep Space and The Universe from your Backyard. He is president of the Astronomy Foundation and a member of the Board of Directors for Starmus Festival. An avid observer of astronomical objects for more than thirty-five years, he was honored by the International Astronomical Union with the naming of a minor planet, 3617 Eicher.

Eicher's book will bring you up to date on astronomy and it will also get your imagination going.

This is an outstanding book, making some rather difficult concepts understandable, and bringing the reader up to date with advances in astronomy and related fields. The photos are good. The writing is clear and it is also clear that Eicher knows his subject and is enthusiastic about it, as you would expect from the editor of a well known astronomy magazine. That said, be aware that the science in this book is still somewhat difficult; it may be a bit of a slow read for some readers, but keep at it, you'll learn a great deal.

Some of the details in the book represent consensus astronomy, understandings shared by many or most astronomers, useful in the present state of knowledge but apt to change quickly with new data. We're in something of a golden age for astronomy and related sciences, despite budget limitations imposed on space agencies such as NASA. Among other things, consensus is that in a billion years the sun will be far larger and hotter and Earth's oceans will boil away, and dark energy is 68.3% of the mass/ energy of the universe. On average a 1-kn asteroid should hit the earth once every 700,000 years and a 140-meter asteroid should hit once every 20,000 years.

Readers interested in the moon will find Chapter 4 of interest. It discusses recent theories of moon formation, including the wonderfully named Great Impact Hypothesis. Chapter 5, "Where has all the water gone" discusses water on Mars and elsewhere in the solar system. It appears that Mars once had liquid water on the surface, and many large valleys suggest erosion by water. So where is it? Water is important because it is intimately tied to life, and also because humans venturing there would find water useful. Chapter 6, "Why did Venus turn inside out" may interest fewer readers, but it discusses the relative lack of impact craters and suggests volcanic activity has remade the surface. Chapter 7, "Is Pluto a planet?" looks at that topic, not that whether it is a "planet" is such a big deal, but it keeps surprising us--new moons discovered in 2010 and 2011. Then there's the Kuiper Belt, which has 1000 small icy bodies but may also have 100,000 objects with diameters of more than 100 km. There's a lot out there.

Chapter 8 looks at planets outside our solar system. The search for exoplanets is vigorous and currently a popular aspect of astronomy, Credible estimates suggest 40 billion planets orbiting within habitable zones of sun-like and red dwarf stars, in the Milky Way, and in the universe could be 100 billion times the 40 billion. That suggests that even if the possibility of life is remote, it probably does exist--that "habitable zone" proviso is the key. Chapter 9 is a little less exciting, on the Milky Way; we're apparently in a barred spiral and our sun orbits the galaxy center at 240 kilometers a second, taking 220 million years for the orbit. Chapter 10 looks at the eventual merger of the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy. Chapter 11 discusses the echo of the Big Bang. That one still stumps me, all the matter and all the energy in all the universe contained in a singularity presumably of infinite density and perhaps no larger than the period at then end of this sentence.

Chapter 12 looks at how big the universe is. Tens of billions of light years, but if the universe is infinite the number of light years should also be infinite, another aspect I can't quite wrap my head around--but this chapter helps a bit. There was nothing anywhere, everything nowhere and suddenly there was no more nothing and something became infinite--my phrasing, but again after digesting the chapter I have a little better sense of the possibilities. Chapter 13 examines dark matter. 4.9% of the material in the universe is "normal", that would be us humans and what we usually see as real; 26.8% dark matter and 63.8% dark energy--somehow I envision a vampire astronomer deep in the Carpathians chuckling over dark energy powering things.

The rest of the chapters consider dark energy, black holes, the fate of the universe, and the meaning of life. They sort of all blend in. The eventual fate is an infinite darkness devoid of light save for red dwarf stars, like some foggy stage set for a movie set in dark hours of Victorian London. Eicher's book will get your imagination going.

This book will get you up to date in astronomy...

I have been a subscriber to Astronomy Magazine and have a decent library of astronomy and physics books, so I am not without material to keep me busy. This work from Eicher is the latest, and best, addition to that library. The book is meant to be a survey of today's hottest and most media-driven topics in Astronomy and Cosmology, all wrapped up into one source. Its success comes not only from how thoroughly Eicher treats each subject, but how readable it is for the average person. Alex Fillipenko's introduction is a superb primer, and the rest is an entertaining orientation to the hot picks of today's research, the lives of stars, our Solar System (including poor Pluto), and on and on until you're caught up to the state of the science in 2015, and invited with open arms to keep moving forward with a solid knowledge of what we know now. In summary, consider this book a nice update to Carl Sagan's legendary "Cosmos" series, and a deeper dive into some of the topics DeGrasse Tyson addressed in his own series.

Excellent Journey through the Cosmos

I am a newcomer to the world of Astronomy. I've started a little over a year ago and had two initial goals: 1) observe with my eyes, binoculars, and telescope (no electronics) to learn the night sky, and 2) educate myself through books on many different subjects around Astronomy. I subscribed to monthly magazines, Astronomy included, and was excited when I saw this book authored by David Eicher. I pre-ordered and patiently awaited.

It was worth the wait.

I skimmed through the book for a quick glance and was excited to start the book. Once I started I found it very hard to put down. So much so that I spent a few hours over the weekend and read it in its entirety (including all of the terms at the end). I finished with my mind racing with many more thoughts or extended questions on the subject matter. Some of it was due to my lack of knowledge of some of the basics, and some of it was due to my mind processing the things I just learned.

I felt that Mr. Eicher did an excellent job of taking you on a journey through the entire book and relating many of the chapters to each other. The best part of this book is that it left me wanting more. It left me with a new set of questions. It left me with an excitement to go even deeper on the different topics.

As a newcomer to Astronomy, I loved this book.

Are you above average? Is your child an A student? Is your employee an introvert or an extrovert? Every day we are measured against the yardstick of averages, judged according to how closely we come to it or how far we deviate from it.

The assumption that metrics comparing us to an average—like GPAs, personality test results, and performance review ratings—reveal something meaningful about our potential is so ingrained in our consciousness that we don’t even question it. That assumption, says Harvard’s Todd Rose, is spectacularly—and scientifically—wrong.

About the Author

Todd Rose is the director of the  Mind, Brain, and Education program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education where he leads the Laboratory for the Science of the Individual. He is also the cofounder of The Center for Individual Opportunity, a non-profit organization that promotes the principles of individuality in work, school, and society. He lives  in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

A critical read for educators - and, really, all of us...

This is a critical read for educators – and all of us who believe in nurturing, supporting and sparking talent and human potential. Todd Rose is a provocative writer, speaker and thinker. In this page-turner, he shares a captivating historical and scientific account of how we came to value a mythical sense of average and provides glimpses (via short vignettes and case studies/intriguing examples) into ways of thinking, being and acting that can support and inspire readers toward the #EndofAverage. The concepts of jaggedness, context and multiple pathways that Todd Rose lays out have CONSUMED my mind since reading this book and fundamentally altered how I view and interact with my work, the world around me – and myself. I cannot wait to engage in conversation on this book - and, as with all great reads, it left me with a question that is directly supporting my work as an educator moving forward: How can this science of the individual - of jaggedness, context and multiple pathways - support us in re-imagining education to GAIN human potential?

Rose hits a home run on what it takes to make your company more competitive.

Since Prof. Rose praises Performance-based Hiring in this book I shouldn't write a review. However, despite my extreme positive bias the idea of designing products (iPhones, TV, cars) and services (education, health care, customer support) around the needs of the individual is accelerating in most areas and makes perfect sense. Rose makes a persuasive case this same trend needs to apply in all areas of society. Hiring practices and those related to management and HR seem to be the furthest behind. The book is a great read for anyone who wants to understand and catch-up to the underlying trends.

Book of the decade

Only a few books will transform the way you look at the world. This is one of those. It addresses assumptions we are not even aware of. Our world is built on the idea there is such a thing as an average human. For example we can measure the heights of all human beings, average them, and this gives us the average height. We can do the same for arm length, leg length, etc. That gives us the dimensions of the average human being. Did you know there might not be a single human being that is of average length with average arms and average legs? We use the idea of average at schools too: we let all kids do a certain test at school, determine the average, and if you score above, you did well, if you score below, you didn't. This idea is utterly false, as ably demonstrated in this book. You cannot actually do that! This book gives the history where the idea of the average human came from, how insidiously it is used everywhere in our society, and demonstrates with many, many examples that this does not work. I highly recommend businesses and private schools should embrace the findings of this book.
