Real world happiness is there if we just know how to look

I'd heard from someone this book was coming out, and I'm glad to have finally had a chance to read it. It was all I expected, and more, coming from a noted medical practitioner who has followed closely the Socratic dictum, Know Thyself. It is in knowing oneself, as Dr. Cornwall so beautifully says, that we can truly understand our world and find happiness. Early on, when we struggle with him to shampoo his twin boys' hair without all the drama usually involved, we realize our storyteller is someone just like us, but more than a bit better educated. He could have spend a hundred pages talking way over our heads, but he doesn't. From the first page, we understand he is a real person with very ordinary challenges and he works on them with the personal tools all of us have close at hand. A very satisfying read.

Great Gem!

I thoroughly enjoyed this short, but great gem! I know I will be rereading it. Although it contains philosophical insights, the author uses
concrete examples to illustrate his ideas. This is very helpful to the reader in recalling and incorporating the authors thoughts into his/her own life.
I will never hear "Ahhh" again and not think of this book!

I love the phrase that

There are many meaningful phrases and comparison in this book.
I love the phrase that, the moment we close our eyes, we should be able to recall a MEMORY because the things that matters most are often UNTOUCHABLE! So, keeping stuffs are no longer a necessity but a memory is sufficient enough to keep.
Hey, I love the term “Clutter Busters” used to describe baskets and containers, really sounds like it, though.
Very true as it seems that a Shopaholic are an example of someone who has a lot of clutter because they buy by impulse. The important words to remind us of is what to buy, to keep, to give, to donate, etc. which are powerful words to remember and practice.
Release the Kindness hidden in you and GIVE to others without expecting anything in return and feel good deep inside you and your soul.
Finally, just follow the simple rule, putting things back to where they belong is a great way to prevent clutter. Good read!

Some people flip houses. This book will flip your life.

Last week I was sitting outside a coffee shop reading a book on my kindle when a youngish guy walked by carrying a coffee and a computer, looking for a place to sit.

Since all of the tables were occupied and he was looking a bit displaced, I offered him a seat at my table. Relieved, he sat down and expressed his gratitude. I promptly went back to my reading but I could feel his eyes boring into me as I anticipated the dreaded question.

"What are you reading?" he finally blurted.

Now I know this is neither a profound nor earth-shattering inquiry but there were two problems at hand here.

One, I'm terrible at summarizing books. Just awful. (Which you're about to discover.) There's just something about the vast amount of information that I'm pressured to wrap into one or two sentences that completely overwhelms and paralyzes me.

And two, I was reading a book about shame and vulnerability. Which ironically, I was ashamed to admit for fear of being vulnerable. Clearly, I had just started reading the book.

Part of me was tempted to lie to youngish guy by replying, "oh, it's just some silly novel."

But then it occurred to me how shameful it would be to lie about reading a book about shame and vulnerability instead of just being vulnerable. Besides, as I'm sure it's obvious--I could use the practice.

"I'm reading Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. It's about shame and vulnerability and how shame can truly only dissipate by allowing yourself to be vulnerable", I quickly blurted.

Allowing myself to be vulnerable led Patrick and I into a conversation for the next hour. Patrick, if you're reading this, c'était une joie pour vous rencontrer. (If this is wrong I blame Google translate.)

This moment of unabashed vulnerability with Patrick was the beginning of a major shift in my life. And I have Daring Greatly to thank for that.*

I've always been one to be honest and open but Brene Brown's writing in Daring Greatly takes openness to another level.

She reinforces what I've known all along but been afraid of admitting--that vulnerability leads to happiness. Or as Brown calls it, "wholeheartedness".

And I, and maybe you too, could damn well use some wholeheartedness in my life.

We're living in a culture of `never enough'. I'm certainly feeling it. Are you? I never work hard enough, I don't help others enough, I'm not successful enough, I don't eat healthy enough... and on and on.

These thoughts of `never enough' turn into feelings of shame and fear. How do we combat shame and fear? By being vulnerable and expressing gratitude, according to Brené Brown. And now, according to me.

Following Brene's advice and expertise garnered through her research and life stories, truly does work.

It was the reading of Daring Greatly that prompted me to finally divulge my long kept secret of my history with an eating disorder; which wound up being my highest trafficked blog post of all time. As Brown explains, we're drawn to other's vulnerability but repelled by our own.

Are you living with shame? Do you always feel an underlying itch of `never enough'? Do you find yourself disconnecting from people you love? If any of these questions ring true then I hope you'll read this book for yourself. Even if they don't ring true, read this book. It truly is a game changer.

Buy It Right. This. Minute. Sit your butt down for an hour, and start reading. I promise you won't want to stop. I promise.Then come back to me and practice your newfound vulnerability. I'll appreciate and love every drop of the real you. And eventually, you will too. That's the truth.

Vulnerability -- The Fearsome But Often Gentle Path to the Heart's Desire

"Vulnerability is not weakness," writes Brown. In fact, "Vulnerability is the the core, the heart, the center of meaningful human experiences." Without vulnerability, there can be no love, there can be no achievement, there can be no greatness. Unfortunately, instead of developing skills of vulnerability, we too frequently develop armoring techniques. We spend all our energy avoiding getting hurt, avoiding shame. But there's no surer way to not feel loved, not feel connected, not be fulfilled, than to practice the avoidance of vulnerability.

Brown is a vulnerability researcher. She sees vulnerability as the prerequisite to living what she calls the "Wholehearted life." The Wholehearted life is one of deep attachment to others, our environment, and our work. It's a life of being "really there," of being willing to fail. No one can avoid being actually vulnerable. We all are vulnerable every moment of our lives -- though some times more than others. But if we run from it, we lose.

Here's how she breaks it down:

1. Love and belonging is an irreducible need. We all need it.
2. Those who feel a deep sense of love and belonging... feel loveable. They believe they are worthy of being loved.
3. A strong belief in our worthiness doesn't just happen. It must be cultivated.
4. The main concern of Wholehearted men and women is living a life defined by courage, compassion, and connection.
3. The Wholehearted identify vulnerability as the catalyst for courage, compassion, and connection. The willingness to be vulnerable is the single most important factor shared among the Wholehearted.

It comes down to this: If we don't embrace vulnerability, we are destined to live a lonely, detached, unfulfilling life. But if we learn to embrace it in the right way, we can live a life of joy and connection. The crux is to understand that we are worthy of love. From the standpoint of this sense of worthiness, we are then able to open ourselves to one another and to the work that is before us.

An enjoyable and potentially life-changing book

If you're not already familiar with Dr. Brown's work, you should definitely check out her three TED talks on Youtube or TED.com. Her videos are among the 10 most viewed TED talks of all time, and those will give you a great introduction to her work.

I was able to obtain an advance copy of Daring Greatly, and have also read Dr. Brown's other two books and her clinical curriculum. Daring Greatly is, I think, her strongest work to-date. It breaks down the core elements of vulnerability (which is NOT weakness), and how allowing ourselves to be open and vulnerable opens us to levels of creativity, connection, and joy that we would never otherwise be able to find. It also covers her earlier works on shame and how shame (which all of us have, and the less we talk about it, the more we have it) impacts our ability to be open and vulnerable, but also how it can numb us and prevent us from being able to experience emotion fully. Daring Greatly (and all of Dr. Brown's work) is based entirely on her academic research; she states in the book that she is not comfortable talking about topics unless backed by solid research, and that's a refreshing change from most other authors in the self-help/pop psychology field.

The book has appeal to multiple audiences; there are sections relating to vulnerability in the workplace, in relationships, in art, expression, and creativity, and, perhaps most importantly for many of us, in raising our children. Each chapter of the book builds on earlier chapters and makes a strong case for taking steps to be more open and vulnerable ourselves. It also speaks to the impact of numbing (the opposite of vulnerability) in popular culture, and the effect of social media, reality television, and other external influences on our self-numbing behaviors.

One of the reasons the book speaks to me so strongly is the openness and vulnerability with which Dr. Brown speaks of her own experiences. She's clear in describing herself as "a great mapmaker and a stumbling traveler" and I think it the descriptions of her own struggles with vulnerability that make the book so accessible and relatable.

While not a "how-to" book, Daring Greatly clearly describes the problems that shame and lack of vulnerability create, and how they come about, so that we can work to adapt our behaviors and learn to live more fully, vulnerability, and wholeheartedly.

Finally, for the scientific minded, Dr. Brown has included a lengthy and detailed appendix in which she describes her research methodology and the fundamentals of Grounded Theory research, the most rigorous and complicated of the qualitative research protocols. It's pretty technical, but if anyone has questions about the methodology, rigor, or valildity of the research upon which her books are based should find ample detail and explanation.

I have no financial or other ties Dr. Brown or her work, but I am passionate in believing that her work in shame resilience and vulnerability could make an enormous difference to society if it were more widely discussed.

A great guide to a two way relationship with God

What a great handy intro to hearing God. God made us to be in a relationship with Him. A central part of that is hearing God. Peters personal narrative and basic guide can help anyone longing to hear God. I highly recommend this guide!

Short, simple, and sweet. All good things I like to see in a book.

Peter, you've done a magnificent job listening to Gods voice in writing this book. One thing I really loved about this was that you gave some of the most simple explanations about things I think so many people find so difficult to explain and sometimes to understand.
Now, with these tools, without a doubt in my mind I know I'll be able to receive more of His Spirit. Thank you for this, I feel like it's going to mean more than you know to a lot of people.

Author/speaker/life coach and consultant Timothy Lee sees his purpose to be a source of inspiration and change for anyone who refuse to settle for anything less than an extraordinary life. He is passionate and dedicated to helping us live a life of abundance, fulfillment and success. His previous books on STRESS and LOW CARB HEALTHY EATING are becoming very popular – primarily because of Timothy’s straightforward, accessible manner of presentation. This newest book on NLP follows that successful presentation.

Though NLP is growing in recognition, Timothy opens his book with a fine definition and explanation: ‘Neurolinguisticsprogramming, or NLP, works on a fairly simple theory– if a person’s behavior works by making a person think that an action or a thought process is triggered by a particular experience, then changing the way a person thinks about that experience will be enable him to adopt behaviors that he will want to embrace. Now, how does that work? It all boils down to how people learn how to create automatic behaviors for themselves.’ And form that Introduction Timothy steps into the guide promised by the title: How to Overcome Any Addiction, Removing Fear from Your Mind, Quick Fix for Self-esteem, Appreciate Behaviors, Induce a Positive State, and Make Your Feelings More Useful.

A too-brief presentation of NLP's power and methods.

The author is very upbeat about life and expresses a desire to help others achieve that level of satisfaction. He offers some visualizations, brief and illustrated in a general way. I wish he had some experiences of his own to share with us to show and prove that these techniques work. Much copy is about self-talk and self-imaging. But hardly any are developed and illustrated in a concrete way. For instance, we have this: "Normalize the elements of your failure by mixing them with your positive thoughts."

This is a short book, especially when you consider the first few pages are wasted on a oft-repeated "thank you and congratulations on downloading this book" type of introduction. And then about a 3-page copyright . At the end we have about 10 pages of introduction to the author's other books. NLP is a BIG subject, and to adapt it well into your life, you need a fuller presentation than presented in this book. I don't think this book was written by an expert in the NLP field or a in-depth practitioner. Nor were there examples from the lives of others.

Just May Help You Break Out of Some Self-Destructive Habits

As a reader, I tend to prefer long, detailed, and thorough books on a topic. This book really wet my appetite for more information and history about its main topic, which is neurolinguistic programming. In a nutshell, this is a technique for associating "good" and "bad" things with certain triggers so you can gain more control over addictive aspects of life that may not be very productive.

As a very short primer or how-to on this subject, I'm guessing that there are some readers out there for which this book may just save your life -- in the sense that it may help you break out of some damaging, self-destructive habits.

With that said, this is only a brief glimpse into the world of neurolinguistic programming (NLP), and many readers will need to 1) learn more about NLP, and 2) complement this approach with several others to really make headway on some of the more entrenched problems and addictions of modern life.

But with this book is hope, I think, and also a very concise plan. So I think it may be a part of the puzzle for some, as it lays out a pretty clear guide for tackling addiction and self-destructive habits with this NLP approach.

An easy read for any woman regardless of her age who wants a practical advice on how to be healthy and grow old gracefully with as few wrinkles as possible.

From its title the book promises to deliver an answer. And it does, not one answer and not a miraculous one pill solves all problems but a simple logical way to look at what effects every woman no matter her life style - aging and how we can deal with it.
It accomplishes this by reminding us of some very practical pieces of advice we received during our younger years, you are what you eat, your skincare regime is the most important contributor to good healthy skin and being active is not a duty but an aid to promoting health and well being.
It is an easy book to read as the tone of the book is that of a friend sitting having coffee with you.

I enjoyed reading it and gained a lot from it but felt it could have gone a little deeper into some of her statements, maybe even taken one or two case studies of how women have improved their health etc by taking more exercise, being practical about nutrition and not spending a fortune hunting for that miracle pill which will make us look twenty years younger. I did wonder, how many of us fifty something year olds would wish to go back to that era of our lives?

I had forgotten how much emphasis is placed on how we look today, and the book reminded me of this, which is perhaps a good thing as beyond having a strict skincare routine since I was a teenager, I now know it is time to make adjustments such as taking supplements etc.
I was hoping for a few recommendations as with regard to dealing with skin problems as we age but that is perhaps only a personal gripe. On the whole I enjoyed the book.
I would recommend it to all women young and old as we do become complacent about working on a daily routine to help us age slowly or more importantly age with less health complaints and less wrinkles.

This is a great guide on building confidence and also increasing your self-esteem. This book is put into simple terms that everyone can understand and also it provides the meaning of self-esteem which is very important. All in all, if you are interested in a gaining self-esteem and self-confidence. Self-help books have always been on my reading list and I love books about self-esteem, confidence and using those things to your advantage. What I really liked about this book is that it was broken down into exercises about self-esteem and these exercises are geared towards helping the individual improve their self-esteem. Self-confidence is very important in building self-esteem. It's hard to trust yourself if you are not confident enough of what you're capable of. And as what this book says, self-esteem will lead you to improved a way of life. It's good to learn from this book the internal and external sources of self-esteem. This book also includes a self-esteem test and exercise which is very helpful, so you would know yourself a little better. I guess this is the most practical book i have read about self-esteem. It has more information about negative thoughts and how to practice self-acceptance. And as a mother what i like about this book is it includes informations about how to nurture your childrens self-esteem.
