Original Sinn

We all start off as enquiring, vivacious, insatiable seekers after knowledge and experience. Some of us, despite the best efforts of our schools, peers and workplaces, never settle down and follow the script. Mags Mackean is one such 'original'. It's an intoxicating gift, which throws open doors to fascinating new worlds at every turn, bringing colour and interest to one's life and to the lives of others around, if they are willing. But sooner or later it becomes evident that there is also a flip side to all this divergence: chaos, incontinuity and existential angst: where is the real me in all this? Are there no constants? Why the restlessness? Why can't I just find happiness in the now? Exasperated, Mags drops everything and embarks on a last ditch search for answers to these questions, which finds her among other things hanging off Mt Bagarach in France, tripping on shamonic ayahuasca in the Amazon and communing with exiled Tibetans. There are terrific leaps of imagination and lots of great insights along the way.
The tasks she had set herself were to resolve her unease by digging out and acknowledging those strands of herself which she had denied and repressed, and to find a perfect narrative to tie all her disparate strands together into one. But here is the Catch 22: what if the narratives available 'out there' just keep falling short for the ever more discerning seeker? Does that then leave a stark choice between nihilism or mystical belief?
Mags finds another way. An arguably closer oneness with the world may be found, not through co-opting nature and others into a rarefied, ready-made narrative, but through emmersion in physical experience, through tuning in to the resonances of co-existence and co-experience. The reasoning and the stories can come later.
The irony is, however, that her path to that "felt intelligence" is packed with stories and bizarre muses or mystic "guardians of [her] psychic thresholds". OK, it's a book, and it's probably impossible to contemplate and communicate experience to others without the help of stories, where every word is in itself a metaphor (Wittgenstein?). She concludes that life is itself a fiction and our happiness depends on how well we master our own narrative of where we come from and where we are heading.
So what is the happy-making narrative for the gifted but unsettled 'original'? Did she really find her peace, order and resolution in the end? I hope not. I fear this Freudian / Buddhist quelling of restless inner voices may lead to the Mags of this world hanging up their seeker-sneakers, laying down their notepads and retiring contentedly to wisteria-laden cottages in the home counties.

The author of the Upside Down Mountain used to climb mountains; quite literally she was chasing highs in her search for life’s offerings. In her nourishing prose, Mags MacKean allows us to follow her from the conquest of peaks to a distinctly downhill journey. Through the enlightenment of ancient wisdom and insight, The Upside Down Mountain moves us from the fatigue of constant climbing to the opposite journey, that of the earthbound one that can enable a more abiding sense of wonder and fulfillment.

Ten Wisdoms of Descent

First you find your/a purpose. Then find meaning, using purpose to help people. Realise you are building the World with other people. You are special because you are building an intelligent Gaia planet with the rest of Humanity. Fulfilment comes with creativity and sharing. This book follows one woman’s journey, the same as all our journeys, but not written like this! Mag’s intrapersonal intelligence and purpose, to interpersonal writing and meaning.
